"Ear Training is hard and boring!" – Said every guitar player.
I can see why almost everyone thinks this. Ear training is usually taught in a very slow, complex, and boring way.
But it doesn't have to be!
To help with this, I will walk you through 3 effective, simple, and fun ear-training exercises. Let's get into it.
Ear Training Exercise #1: Sing scales
Singing scales is a core fundamental ear training skill. To identify intervals quickly, you need to be able to create them—a.k.a. sing them. And don't worry if you have a horrible voice—you don't need to be a good singer! You just need to match pitches. So, start singing some scales!
Ear Training Exercises #2 Sing random scale degrees.
Music doesn't always follow a straight line, so you need to practice singing these scale degrees out of order to train your ear properly.
A way to do this is to use the point-and-sing method. Draw out the scale degrees on a piece of paper: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Then point to one and sing it, point to another one and sing that, and so on.
Ear Training Exercises #3 Sing melodies.
To identify melodies, licks, and solos, you need to practice singing scale degrees in the way they would normally be played.
All you need to do is write down a bunch of 3-5 note melodies and sing them. When you can do that, your ear will be so much better.
