I have found five significant reasons why other ear training websites, apps, and courses don't work and cause guitar players to get stuck.

Screen_Shot_2022-10-07_at_11.44.44_AM.pngThey teach ear training in isolation.

Screen_Shot_2022-10-12_at_12.28.20_PM.pngAlmost everyone teaches ear training by making you listen to notes and chords in isolation and try to identify them. The problem with this is this isn't how music works.

In music, nothing is played in isolation, so why would you want to train your ear this way? You need to train your ear in a way that gets you ready for real musical situations.

Screen_Shot_2022-10-07_at_11.46.11_AM.pngThey don't show you how to apply what you hear to your guitar.

This is a big missing piece. Most try to show you how to identify different notes and chords, but they never show how to use that skill in your playing. You deserve to know how ear training applies to soloing, songwriting, rhythm playing, improvising, or whatever is important to you.

Screen_Shot_2022-10-07_at_2.50.50_PM.png Everyone teaches ear training in a linear way. Screen_Shot_2022-10-07_at_3.28.15_PM.png

Aural skills are usually taught in a linear, step-by-step way. And to most, this sounds like the best way to do it. You learn one skill, and you stay there until you are ready for the next skill.

The problem with this is it's boring, frustrating, and hard to stick to. The best way to develop your ear is to build up multiple skills simultaneously. You progress faster, have more fun, and look forward to training your ear.

Screen_Shot_2022-10-07_at_2.53.17_PM.png Relating songs to intervals.

A common way to memorize different intervals is to relate them to songs. For instance, if you play the 1st note of a scale and then the 5th, it will sound like Star Wars. So every time you hear Star Wars, you know it is the 5th.

The main problem with this is the 5th will only sound this way when played in isolation, after the one, and with that general rhythm. It won't sound like that when you hear it applied in music. The other issue is do you really want to be humming Star Wars when you are songwriting or transcribing a song?

Screen_Shot_2022-10-07_at_2.54.34_PM.pngNo one teaches how to identify chords and notes through emotions.

In music, everything you hear expresses something. Identifying chord progressions and notes based on emotion is key. This allows you to connect deeper to what you are hearing and playing and more accurately identify what you are hearing.
